Tips for a Fun & Safe Chicago Beach Day

With many of Wirtz’ Chicago apartment properties near the lakefront, the beach is a popular destination for residents. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy yourself on a hot, summer day. You can also get some of the best views of the city from the lakefront. If you’re planning on spending the day at the beach, here are some tips for a fun and safe day.

Check the beach status before you go

The Chicago Park District’s beach web site is updated regularly with information on beach safety. It provides two ratings for each beach. One is the swim status, which lets you know if it’s safe to swim or not. The other is a water quality number, which lets you know how much bacteria is in the water. If you’re planning on swimming during your beach day, checking the site will let you know if it’s a good idea or not. The site also provides information about amenities, rules and transportation.

Bring Plenty of Water

Relaxing on the beach can dehydrate you pretty quickly. On a busy beach day you may not want to pack up all of your things and head to the store for some water.

Know What Not To Bring

Alcohol and smoking are prohibited on Chicago beaches. Some beaches have restaurants on them where you can purchase alcoholic beverages, including Castaways on North Avenue Beach. If you have a flotation device, make sure it’s Coast Guard-approved.

Are Lifeguards Present?

Lifeguards are on duty daily during the summer. Before you go in the water, check to make sure a lifeguard is on duty.

Relax and Have Fun!

There’s a reason Chicago’s beaches are so popular in the summer. They’re fantastic places to stay cool, enjoy the outdoors and soak up the sun. Keeping a few things in mind will allow you to make the most of these excellent resources we have in our city.
